Lee Morris from fstoppers.com encouraged us by the post to share information about the idea of building a digital camera with the largest ever made CCD sensor.
Spectral Instruments is provider of cooled, high-end CCD-based camera systems for scientific imaging applications from astronomy to preclinical drug discovery. The film they made promotes a huge 112-megapixel 1100-series camera sensor that has a dynamic range so great that it can photograph the sun and the stars simultaneously.
In particular, comparison the 95mm x 95mm (3.7-inch) sensor which is normally used in space telescopes with a CCD derived from a regular camera looks absolutely incredible. There is the idea of constructing a camera based on this powerful CCD sensor. Is it a good idea? Are there any interested customers for such a device?
