SIx months ago we wrote about a Chinese camera called the Kineraw S35 Digital Cinema Camera. It is a 2K digital cinema camera featuring a Super35 CMOS sensor (you can read our post here). Now there's more info on the device and according to Wentao Marvin who wrote an article about the camera for Nofilmschool, the creators entered the final stage of internal user testing, public testing should start this month. "This update focuses on the S35 (Super35-sized sensor) and S8 (Super8mm-sized sensor) model as they are being developed back-to-back.". There are renders and sample videos. Below you can check out the camera body design:

And as stated above here are the sample videos. You can also download high-quality files (here and here).

And here are the key specifications of the S35 model:

  • Super 35mm sized CMOS sensor
  • Dual raw recording, uncompressed 12bit linear cinemaDNG (800Mbps) or 10bit log90 GoPro Cineform RAW (100Mbps), uses regular 2.5 inch SSD or HDD (shoot and dump)
  • DCI 2K 1-24fps, 1080p 1-30fps, 720p 1-60fps. (Not yet finalised)
  • Interchangeable lens mount, supports PL (standard), Canon EF, Nikon F, OCT-19
  • PL mount version 280mm*135mm*155mm, approx. 4kg

So much to say: incredible detail, as expected at 2K and vast data rate. Lovely saturation in the first test, although greens looked a little too rich for my liking. Very interesting to see what this will retail at, and likewise product support would be like. Love the hideous shape of the test model, looks like something from a 1950's Soviet science lab. The 'lunchbox' aesthetic of the release model won't win any design awards I'd imagine, but lets see what this thing is capable of in talented hands.
