Here's a nice After Effects video tutorial created by Laurence Grayson, a Sydney-based video producer and motion graphics designer with over ten years’ experience in creating and delivering digital media.

Thanks to this tutorial you will learn how to use the standard toolkit in After Effects to create a fairly realistic flight instrument. The author provides the project file for free so if you want to get it make sure to follow this link. You will need to register on the website to be able to download the file though.

The project includes an attitude indicator / artificial horizon instrument as well.

And here's a comment from the author: "It has already been pointed out to me that the ball compass isn’t really used in airplane instrumentation – it’s more of a boat thing. Which is why I’ve added an attitude indicator / artificial horizon to the project file."
