Creating and Removing DaVinci Resolve In and Out Points

3 mins read

Sooner or later, you’re going to need to set DaVinci Resolve in and out points. Why? Because even if you’re just chopping up your holiday footage, knowing where your clips start and end is editing 101. It’s all about controlling what your audience gets to see and what stays on the cutting room floor.

How to Create DaVinci Resolve In and Out Points

The DaVinci approach to the process for setting in and out points is straightforward and mirrors the method used in many other non-linear editing systems (NLEs). Pressing ‘I’ slaps down an in point at the start of the action, and hitting ‘O’ marks the out point where you want things to wrap up. Easy, right? This can be done in both the source viewer, where you preview your clips, and the timeline, where you assemble your edits.

How to Create DaVinci Resolve In Points

Adjusting In and Out Points

Changed your mind? Adjustments to in and out points are often necessary as you refine your edit. In full-screen mode or within the timeline, you can reposition these points by scooting over to where you think the in or out should really go, and just press ‘I’ or ‘O’ again to update it. That’s it.

How to Remove in and out Points in DaVinci Resolve

Now, what if you want to clear those points out? Maybe you marked them wrong, or just want a do-over. To remove an in-point, hold down Option (or Alt) + ‘I’. To clear an out point, use Opt + ‘O’. If you need to clear both points simultaneously, Opt + ‘X’ is your go-to shortcut. This command works regardless of whether you’re in the source viewer or working directly in the timeline.

Cross-Application Consistency

The shortcuts for marking and removing in and out points are consistent across different modules of DaVinci Resolve. It doesn’t matter if you’re on the edit page, cut page, or mixing it up in Fairlight. However, it’s worth noting that software updates may affect functionality, so always make sure that you’re working with the latest version or have a solid understanding of your current version’s quirks.

Additional Tips

For even quicker clip management, hitting ‘X’ while a clip is selected will automatically mark both in and out points around the clip. This is by far, the fastest way to define a segment that exactly matches a clip’s duration without manually setting the start and end points.
