Opening DaVinci Resolve For the First Time — The Key Elements Of the Interface

2 mins read

Before we get into the multifaceted (and more complicated) capabilities of DaVinci Resolve, propelling video production from the initial media import to the final export, let’s focus on what we see just after opening a new project. These elements of the DaVinci Resolve interface will always be there for you, so learning them by heart is something to consider.

Top Menu Line

This area offers access to all of DaVinci Resolve’s settings, preferences, and controls. From file management to playback and project configuration, the top menu line is made for navigating the software’s extensive features and tools.

Bottom Page Access Bar

Situated at DaVinci Resolve’s lower extremity, this bar leads to its seven core pages: Media, Cut, Edit, Fusion, Color, Fairlight, and Deliver. The icons represent individual stages of the production workflow, allowing quick transitions between tasks without ever leaving Resolve. Each page on the Davinci Resolve Interface is devoted to a specific phase of video creation, ranging from media import and quick cuts to advanced color grading, audio mixing, and final export.

  • Media Page: The starting point for any project, the Media Page is where you import and manage your video, audio, and image files. It’s there to help you organize your media assets before you get into editing.
  • Cut Page: Tailored for fast-paced editing. The Cut page offers tools for quickly trimming and assembling clips. It is perfect for editors working under tight deadlines or needing to produce quick drafts.
  • Edit Page: The Edit page provides a comprehensive set of tools for detailed video editing. It supports complex timelines, advanced trimming, and an array of transitions and effects, addressing in-depth editing requirements.
  • Fusion Page: Specializing in visual effects and motion graphics, the Fusion page offers a node-based compositing environment. It’s where you create sophisticated effects, animations, and composite scenes.
  • Color Page: DaVinci Resolve’s famous Color page delivers unparalleled color grading and correction tools. Its extensive features support high-end color workflows for achieving cinematic looks.
  • Fairlight Page: Dedicated to audio post-production. The Fairlight page offers a professional digital audio workstation (DAW) environment. It allows for precise audio editing, mixing, and mastering.
  • Deliver Page: The final step in the production process. The Deliver page is where you export your project. It provides customizable rendering options to output your video in various formats, resolutions, and codecs.
